Dr. B. F. “Bernie” Baur was born Oct. 5, 1919, in St. Louis, Missouri to Gottlob C. and Nellie Caroline Schuetze Baur. He graduated from high school in Carlinville, Illinois and moved to San Antonio, where he enlisted in 1942, serving 4 years in the Army Air Corps. On completion of his military service, he enrolled in Texas Chiropractic College, where he received the Doctor of Chiropractic and PhC. degrees. He started his practice in San Antonio and continued in Yorktown, Texas, for several years.

In 1958, he had a major change in priorities and life direction when he was baptized by J.L. Wright and with great joy began studying the Bible for himself. He delivered his first sermon in Yorktown and found his true calling. In the 1960’s, Dr. Baur preached for churches in Cuero, Texas; Cassville, Missouri; and then served as evangelist for Omen Road Church of Christ in Tyler, Texas.

Dr. Baur preached in gospel meetings all over the country, as well as Australia. He conducted meetings in Yorktown, Texas; Spokane, Washington; Ithaca, New York; Bismarck, North Dakota; McCook, Nebraska; North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, as well as Chandler and Buffalo, Texas. He was part of the Greater Northeastern Crusade for Christ in 1965 at the New York World’s Fair.

In the 1970’s, Dr. Baur was the minister in Ruidoso, New Mexico, and the Montana Ave. Church of Christ in El Paso, Texas.

In the 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s he preached for the church in Anderson, Texas; Southwest Church of Christ, Tyler and helped start the Westlake Shores Church of Christ of Chandler. He appeared for many years as a panelist on the “Give me the Bible” television program which broadcasts each Sunday morning on KETK, Region 56. He was a regular on the show for ten years and then was an alternate as needed.

After moving to Palestine several years ago, Dr. and Mrs. Baur attended the Crockett Rd. Church of Christ, Palestine, where he recently served as Associate Minister for the congregation which he fulfilled until his passing on August 3, 2012, at Palestine Regional Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Gertrude Kessinger and Thelma Brantner. Survivors include wife of 63 years, Mildred Holland Baur of Palestine; daughter and son-in-law Jan and Bob Reeder of Buffalo; son Tim and daughter-in-law Ann Baur of Maplewood, Minnesota; grandchildren Mike Baur and wife Ann; Elizabeth Madrigal and husband Eddie; Karen Gosnell and husband Patrick; Laura Driggers and husband Sean; Matt Baur and wife Libby; Mark Baur; great-grandchildren Andrew and Sebastian Madrigal; Mercy, Glory, and Grace Baur and Jane Gosnell expected in October.

He is also survived by his favorite nephew Steve Holland, favorite niece Marilyn Hubbard, and by other relatives and a host of friends.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at Burks Walker Tippit funeral Home, Tyler. Graveside service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 7, at Chandler City Cemetery with Dan Manuel officiating. Memorial Service at Crockett Road Church of Christ, Palestine, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas, Tyler, or to a children’s home.
